Jane Speier
[BA] Sculpture
[Major] Math
In my work I explore plus size women and the idea of beauty. This work comes from a long term lack of acceptance, externally and internally. These felted figures allowed me to study my body in a way that removes the ‘fix-it’ mentality and focuses on basic shapes, lines, and textures devoid of criticism of the subject itself. On the back of the figures appear two different scenes adapted from memories of Northern Minnesota in my childhood, one with warmer sunrise tones and vibrant colors and the other with deep blues and muted purples. I created this set using an aluminum wire frame and corriedale wool.
