Isabella Simetich

[BFA] Studio Art – Ceramics

The tradition of folklore continues with my ceramic sculptures through an exploration of cultural legends. Guided by intense research and motivated by family tradition, I focus on how the ancient art of storytelling connects us as people through the subjects of folklore, community, and memory. When creating each sculpture, I choose a different version of a legend and shape the form to emphasize and enhance the narrative. Each bold sculpture acts as an individual narrator and is intricately wrapped with carvings and paintings of Brazilian myths to illustrate the depth and fluidity of storytelling. Found in both the form of the sculptures and the character of each myth is a nature of mischief, danger, and playfulness.
