I worked more on my illustrations and started coding. I have a really long way to go, but I’ve made more progress than I could have at the beginning of the semester
I didn’t have much time to work on my site this weekend because of the drag show, but I’m still feeling good about it! If anything, i’m more pumped to finish it!
I got a lot done over break! I’m nearly done with my illustrations and my copy is pretty much final! I’m really proud of what I had to turn in at crit today and I got a lot of good feedback from the class. My site is really simple, but that will help me when I start coding!
The tour of Hudl was pretty great in my opinion. From experience, it’s really hard to work in a small room and sit in front of a computer for 9 hours and still come up with great ideas and do my best work. I thought the playfulness and having a game room is such a great way to get your workers up and moving.
I thought the whole paid and unlimited vacation tim was interesting. It’s nice to see that their workers don’t take advantage of the system. And it just goes to show you of what kind of people they hire.
I wish we could’ve seen a lot more of the graphic design aspect of things.
Today we purchased our wordpress themes and I ended up going with a free one since the nicer ones are quite pricy. The process of installing was harder than I expected but it was easy to follow. Now its time to start importing images. We also got to listen to Fred Dust speak and I think he made some really good points about the design process and was an excellent story teller!
Critique was successful, honestly i like the concept of my site but was not to excited about the design. Sometimes it is hard to get students to give real honest feedback. Maybe they’re scared. But also sometimes i think sometimes you just don’t know what to say, or how a project could improve itself.
I’m starting to get the hang of coding CSS, but I don’t know how well I’ll actually be able to implement into a website. I think I’m going to spend more time on code academy over break. My wire frame is far enough along that I think I’m ready to start creating my illustrations during break. I wrote a lot of the copy, or at least what the copy should convey in general.
Today in class we started looking at wordpress themes. I am hoping to find a free one that I like but you get what you pay for. I think wordpress is a really neat site where you have the ability to customize without doing all of the coding basics. I am looking for a clean and minimal template.
I have having trouble making the gif in photoshop, so I decided to make mine if After Effects and import it to photoshop and work with the layers there. I have started to do that but the gif looks more glitchy than it did when I was in after effects. I have tried experimenting with the amount of slides/timing but that hasn’t seemed to solve the problem. I am hoping to have this figured out by the next class.
Creating typography and design for print is not the same as creating it for a digital device with a screen. There are some key differences you need to keep in mind.
- A screen is backlit
- can affect visibility of text or strain readers eyes
- Color variation from device to device
- Relationship of screen size and magnifying options to text size and resolution
- Interactivity (links)
- Harder to read type on a screen
- Shows differently on each screen/platform
- Internet connection
Specifically, when thinking about fonts and typography on a screen, some things that will make your text much more legible are:
- Higher x-height
- Greater apertures
- Slightly looser letter spacing
- Generous bowl shape
- Clear shoulders
- Clear ascenders and descenders
A great resource as you move forward is The Elements of Typographic Style Applied to the Web. It’s essentially the web typographer’s bible and can be found here!
