What is human centered design?
Human centered design does just what it says, it centers design around humans. In other words, the user experience or interaction with a product or design comes first. The process starts with the people you are designing for and ends with a new solution that fits their needs. Examples of human centered design are in the proceeding section.
What is maya.com?
Maya is a company that does products based around human centered design. They are located in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and are home to a wide variety career paths. They are a consultancy and design research lab. The company is organized in to three main disciplines: Visual design, engineering, and human sciences. When these three sectors are balanced, that is when you reach the “sweet spot” of human centered design. This video will go more in depth with what they do at Maya and what kind of employees work there. Maya has a large portfolio of amazing and successful work they have done. One of my favorites that they did was a partnership with Oreo and Twitter. Maya created a vending machine that allowed users to create, print, and eat custom Oreos that were based off of trending conversations from the social media site. You can learn more about this project here. Another incredible project they are working on is called Interstacks. Interstacks is a system of snap together, single function electronic blocks that allow you to connect all the devices in your life. With Interstacks, you can connect anything to anything, the possibilities are endless. Interstacks can connect a set of motion sensor lights, run a model train, or have your coffee pot text you when you’re ready. Those are just three of the millions of things that Interstacks can do. You can learn more about them here.
